98 / / 99 At the heart of the changes under RC 2.0 is the enhancement of the educational role and curricula of the RCs, thus the RCs will pilot the following new education programmes: RC academic tutorials: After a trial run in the academic year 2019/2020, the RCs fully implemented the academic tutorial programme starting from 2020/2021. These non-credit-bearing, optional tutorials are taught or supervised by the RCs’ resident and non-resident fellows, conducted in small groups of 10 to 20 students in each session. The tutor ials are categor ised into academic discipl inary tutor ials and general educat ion tutorials. At this pilot stage, the discipline-based academic tutorials are of the following three types: (1) advanced-level academic tutorials, conducted by senior academic staff and entailing intensive reading and preparation. The students participate on a voluntary basis but must be proactive in completing reading assignments and taking part in discussions; (2) general-level tutorials on academic knowledge or methodology, designed and supervised by professors in the respect i ve discipl ine, where students collaborate in team learning and are trained to become trainers themselves for future tutorials in the same subject; and (3) bilingual academic majors tutorials, designed to help students from Chinesespeaking schools adapt to Engl ish-language instruction in their major subjects that are taught in English, such as life sciences, and are conducted by resident or non-resident academic staff from the relevant field. Academic English tutorials are also available to provide academic English training for students in need. In terms of academic staff, on the one hand, the university requires resident academic staff of the RCs to be officially affiliated with Faculties and Departments and to teach credit-bearing courses in the Faculties where appropriate. On the other hand, it also encourages teaching staff from the Faculties and Departments to play a greater role in tutorials or academic advising in the RCs. All of these arrangements reinforce the institutional foundation for the 4-in-1 education model that integrates academic studies with character cultivation.
