110 / / 111 (4) Teamwork and collaboration Interpersonal relationships: Good interpersonal relationships, in a team or in communal life, are not only the key to success, but also a source of personal happiness. Knowing how to smooth out negative personal relationships and how to mediate conflicts and resolve disputes is also an intrinsic part of strong interpersonal skills. Skill in maintaining good interpersonal relationships is not only a desirable trait but it also demonstrates an ability to cope with social environment effectively. Collaborative teamwork: The power of a team working together is often much greater than the sum of its individual members’ capabilities. Recognising and embracing this idea, and knowing how to put it into practice, is essential to one’s career and happiness. Cross-team cooperation: Competition between teams can bring progress; but it must be of a healthy, win-win nature, instead of a fight to the bitter end. Otherwise, the progress achieved would not be easily sustained and, by extension, would make it difficult for civilisations to survive. If teams can collaborate with each other, the synergy will be greater than the sum of the energy of individual teams. In addition to achieving a win-win situation, it can add to the overall benefit of society. Cooperation across teams embodies an attitude of life as well as the ability to engage with people. Team spirit: The beauty of a team lies in its team spirit. Team members’ sense of identity and belonging to the team makes the foundation of a successful team. When a team achieves success and the team spirit is strong, its members can also share the fruits of its success. Understanding the importance of team spirit and mastering how to foster it is an important indicator of the competency of teamwork and collaboration. (5) Service and leadership Strategic thinking: The responsibility of leadership is to look far ahead and aim high while its essence is to serve the community. A leader should always bear the big picture in mind, set the right priority, and focus first on the major issues when handling situations. Acumen and insightfulness are necessary qualities for one to lead others towards common good and make a difference. Service-oriented leadership must be underpinned by strategic thinking in order to achieve the purpose at hand. Service to others: Service-oriented leadership is based on the sincere desire to help others and derive pleasure therefrom. This desire can strongly motivate one to acquire relevant knowledge and skills. Organisational skills: Prioritising tasks based on their importance and urgency can keep things in order; division of labour with established rules will enable each person to effectively perform their job. These measures can make for efficiency and reduce conflicts and disputes. Good organisational skills are a desirable capability and a requirement for a competent leader. Leading by example: Subordinates often follow the example of those above. It is important for leaders to take the initiative to act as role models. They should discipline themselves strictly and treat others generously. This is especially true for service-oriented leadership. (6) Cultural engagement Cultural cultivation: Cultural cultivation is not only embodied in the acquisition of knowledge and skills, but also underpinned by enthusiasm and aspiration.
