It was written by British naval captain Basil Hall and records his exploration of the terrain and routes along the west coast of Korea, as well as his experiences with the residents during his visit to China with Lord Amherst’s mission to the Qing Court in 1816. In the book, Hall mentioned details such as giving English Bibles to Joseon officials and drinking wine together. This travelogue was published in 1818 and became an important document for Europe to understand Korea. In the early 19th century, the Industrial Revolution drove advancements in printing and papermaking technologies in European and American countries, leading to significant breakthroughs in bookbinding, publishing, and printing. The development of steampowered, rotary, and web printing presses made books more common. In the past, only monasteries, governments or wealthy families owned libraries. By the 19th century, public libraries open to the general public began to emerge.
