Collection of Qing Dynasty Imperial Examination Papers Year: 1890s -1900s Call Number: RMK-1-0069 This book is composed of handwritten copies of two sizes, with a total of 27 essays copied from successful candidates in the imperial examinations of the Qing Dynasty. Each essay has marginal notes, circles and postscripts. Some fonts are in square and smooth regular script of the Guan Ge Style, while others are in the unrestrained running script. As eight-legged essay selections and examination books for the imperial examinations were popular, a group of candidates did not study the classics but instead read exam books. On the day of the examination, they copied old essays and thus passed, which was later discovered and prohibited. The materials were still circulating among schools, academies, teachers, and students, with a prevalent trend of handwritten copies at that time. 218 41
