Instructions and Letters from the Most Christian Kings and Their Embassies, and Other Acts Concerning the Council of Trent Taken from the Original (Instructions et lettres des rois tres-chrestiens, et de leurs ambassadeurs, et autres actes concernant le Concile de Trente pris sur les originaux) [French] Year: 1654 Call Number: RBK1600-00065 This book compiles diplomatic letters and correspondence from some of the most renowned kings and religious leaders in Europe during the Council of Trent era, including Henry II, Pope Clement VII, and King Charles IX. The fourth edition of 1654 is the authoritative final draft. Compared to the first edition, published between 1582 and 1651, this edition adds the original instructions and diplomatic letters from the king to the envoys at the Council of Trent, which are of great value to the study of church history. The 1654 edition is in quarto with a handwritten title on the spine and is bound in creamy vellum, preserving the binding style of 17th-century books. During the Renaissance, publishers and printing houses, especially in Italy, would use vellum as the cover to wrap the inner pages of printed books. Because its surface was less greasy and the paper was harder, it was strong and sturdy. The vellum and the pages were then simply bound with leather ropes. This basic vellum binding technique has been used since the Middle Ages and is called Limp Vellum Binding. 248 47
