A View of the Town and Castle of Macao Year: 1746 Call Number: MAP-1746-01 This map was drawn by Emanuel Bowen, a famous British engraver and cartographer in the 18th century, and is included in the Navigantium Atque Itinerantium Bibliotheca, or A Complete Collection of Voyages and Travels. The picture uses the perspective drawing technique to depict George Anson, Great Britain’s first Lord of the Admiralty and first baronet. Anson led the battleship The Centurion to fight against the Spanish Manila Ship in the waters of Macao. Three places are marked in the picture, namely the British battleship The Centurion on the right side of Figure 1, the fortress The Castle on the far right of Figure 2, and the Spanish battleship The Manila Ship in the middle of Figure 3. Anson did not participate in the war between Macao and the Spanish fleet. He arrived in Macao from Southampton on November 12, 1742, to visit China. The historical scene depicted in the picture refers to the War of Jenkins’ Ear, launched by Britain against Spain in 1740, when Anson fought many battles with the Spanish fleet in the South Pacific. In addition, when Anson arrived at Macao with The Centurion, he was welcomed by a gun salute from the Macao people. The scene depicted in this picture may be a combination of two historical events, and it also indirectly suggests that Macao held a prominent position among the world’s ports at that time. 60 09
