Macao City and Port Map (Plan de la Ville et du Port de Macao) [French] Year: 1748 Call Number: MAP-1748-01 This map of the port and city of Macao was drawn by the famous French hydrologist and cartographer Jacques Nicolas Bellin, who was known for his prolific work and expertise in hydrographic and maritime maps. During his tenure, high standards of precision were set for map drawing and engraving, and France became the center of map drawing and publishing at the time. The map consists of two parts: one part consists of Heungshan County (Partie de l’isle de Macao), Macao City (La Ville) and Chinese Village (Village Chinois), and the other part consists of Ilha Verde (I. Verte, Maison de Camp des Jésuites) and Duimianshan (Partie de l’isle des Prêtres). South of the inner city wall of the Macao Peninsula is the Macao urban area where the Portuguese lived at that time. The red squares represent the buildings and street areas in the urban area, and the locations and names of military fortresses and religious sites are carefully marked, including: Guia Fortress (Fort), A-Ma Temple (Pagode Chinoise), Fortress of São Tiago da Barra (St. Jacques et St. Philippe), Bom Parto Fortress (N. De. de Bom Parto) and a cross (Croix), which is believed to be the site of St. Lawrence Church. At the northernmost part of the map, below Heungshan County (Partie de l’isle de Macao), there is a fortress drawn in figurative form, namely the Former Fortress of Mandarin (La Case Blanche, Maison du Mandarin). Ilha Verde (I. Verte, Camp des Jésuites) and Duimianshan (Partie de l’Isle des Prêtres) were private properties of the Jesuits at the time. 66 11
