Pascale Girard is currentiy Associate Professor of early-modern History at the University Gustave Eiffel (France). Her research interests focus on Catholic missions in China and cultural exchanges between Europe and China in the 16th—18th centuries. Roderich Ptak holds a Master of Economics from the University of Guelph, Canada; Dr. phil. and habil. degrees in Sinology from the University of Heidelberg; in 1986 was appoin- ted temporary Professor of Sinology, Heidelberg; in 1991 Heisenberg scholar, and thereafter Professor of Chinese Studies in Germersheim, University of Mainz; and since 1994 he has been Chair of Chinese Studies, Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich. He is the author of many books and articles on Chinese maritime history, Macau history, historical geography, tradicional Chinese zoology, and Chinese literature (see www.sinologie.lmu.de). Rui Manuel Loureiro holds a PhD in History from the University of Lisbon. He is currently a Professor at the Instituto Superior Manuel Teixeira Gomes, in Portimão, and a Researcher at the CHAM - Centre for the Humanities, at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa/ University of Azores. He is still a member of the Maritime Academy.
