The UM Library newly acquires a rare book of Chinese Language Study by Morrison from 1817 (2024/04/24)

We are delighted to have a significant addition to the University of Macau Library's collection, which holds particular relevance to Macau's rich history and cultural heritage. The book titled "A View of China, for Philological Purposes: Containing a Sketch of Chinese Chronology, Geography, Government, Religion & Customs" by Robert Morrison printed in Macao in 1817 has been acquired and is now available for students, faculty, and researchers.

Robert Morrison, a renowned British scholar and missionary, played a pivotal role in Macao during the early 19th century. Arriving in Macau in 1807, Morrison dedicated himself to the study of the Chinese language, culture, and customs. His pioneering efforts laid the foundation for Western understanding and engagement with China.

This book is one of the first imprints from the East India Company’s Press in Macao. “The Materials contained in the Small Volume, were at first intended to be attached to the Chinese Dictionary [published 1815-1823], Printing by Order of the Honorable the East India Company; and to be bound with it. However, as subjects of frequent reference, they will probably be more convenient, printed in the present form, as bound up by themselves” (Preface of the book). The UM Library also holds 3 volumes of the Chinese Dictionary published between 1815-1823, which contains 6 volumes in 3 parts as a complete set.

Given the historical importance of Macau as a trading port and cultural crossroads, Morrison's presence in the city and his contributions cannot be overstated. His work not only enriched the understanding of China among Western scholars but also fostered cultural exchange between East and West.
