Vol. 13 2025.08 I began my tenure as University Librarian at the University of Macau in March 2025. It has been a tremendous honor to join such a talented and dedicated team of library staff. As you may know, the Library Newsletter was first launched in April 2018, with 13 issues published to date. It serves as a vibrant platform for dialogue between librarians and patrons, spotlighting library news and events, as well as our staff's professional services and scholarly achievements. Through this channel, we hope faculty, students, staff, and community members gain deeper insights into our library and team. By joining our activities, you'll not only discover more about our resources and services but also share valuable feedback to shape our future offerings. We are committed to upholding this tradition and will continue publishing the newsletter on an irregular basis. Given that the library releases news and events every week, we plan to evolve its format slightly into more of a semi-annual report from next issue on. This will provide a comprehensive overview of library developments. The exhibition also includes neo-impressionist works by André Hambourg and landscape paintings by Macao-based artists such as Smirnoff, Demée, and Kwok Se, inspired by cultural fusion. “文化傳承–鄧芬文獻資料展” CULTURAL HEITAGE: DENG FEN DOCUMENTS EXHIBITON 由澳門東亞大學公開學院同學會與澳門大學圖書 館合辦，澳大校友及發展辦公室及鄧芬藝術基金 會協辦的“文化傳承──鄧芬文獻資料展”於2024 年9月9日上午在澳大伍宜孫圖書館開幕。 展覽重點呈現澳大圖書館藏的《二十四史》，這套 珍貴的局刻本曾被文人廖桐史、古籍收藏家盧達 文收藏，後由嶺南名畫家鄧芬購入並贈予澳大創 辦人何賢。書中保留了鄧芬的鈐印、批注等，具 有重要文化價值。本次展覽將展出鄧芬注《二十 四史》及其他作品，弘揚中華傳統文化。 展覽日期: 2024.09.09-2024.09.20 The Cultural Heitage: Deng Fen Documents Exhibiton is organized by the University Library and University of East Asia Open College Students’ Association (UEASA) , and co-organized by Alumni and Development Office and Deng Fen Art Foundation. The opening ceremony of the Exhibiton was held at 9 Sep 2024. 鄧芬藝術基金會向澳門大學捐贈珍貴書畫作品 DENG FEN ART FOUNDATION DONATES PRECIOUS CALLIGRAPHY AND PAINTING WORKS TO UM 2024年9月20日下午，澳門大學圖書館在《文化傳承 ——鄧芬文獻資料展》閉幕日舉行鄧芬作品捐贈儀 式。鄧芬後人、鄧芬藝術基金會劉季先生向澳大捐贈 七件鄧芬繪畫、書法原作，以及相關研究電子檔案。 劉季先生讚揚澳大藝術博物館兼具收藏、展覽、教學 和交流功能，服務人才培養，也為師生和市民提供藝 術交流平台。 On September 20, 2024, the University of Macau Library received a donation from the Deng Fen Art Foundation, represented by Kwai Lau. The donation included seven original artworks and a digital archive of Deng Fen’s research. Mr. Lau praised the UM Museum of Art’s support of art education and talent development. 1491年歐氏《幾何原本》搖籃本 THE 1491 INCUNABULUM OF EUCLID’S ELEMENTS 澳大圖書館收藏的這本《幾何原本》（Preclarissimus liber elementorum Euclidis perspicacissimi: in artem geometrie incipit quam foelicissime）是 參考了早期拉丁文譯本及新譯了多種阿拉伯資料修訂出來的版本。該版本於 1491年在意大利維琴察由Leonardus de Basilea and Gulielmus de Papia公 司再印刷出版。與首版相比，刪除了獻詞，並將首頁邊框改為丘比特及動植 物圖案，字體則從哥特體改為更易讀的羅馬字體。此珍本獲得古籍專家傑瑞 米·諾爾曼的高度評價，全球僅84家圖書館收藏。 中葡院士分享《幾何原本》搖籃本入藏澳大的價值和意義 2024年10月28日，澳門大學在科研大樓（N21）舉辦 了一場題為《數學經典與知識傅播:幾何原本搖籃本的 價值和意義》的分享會。馬許願副校長首先介紹了 1491年版《幾何原本》入藏澳大圖書館並成為館藏古 籍中最珍貴的藏品之一的經過。隨後，中國科學院院 士、廣州南方學院校長湯濤教授和葡萄牙里斯本科學 院院士、里斯本大學教授Prof. José Francisco Rodrigues分別就本書的意義、在中國的傳播歷史，以 及搖籃本的歷史背景和1491年版與1482年版的區別進 行了講解和分享。 The edition of Euclid’s Elements (full title: Preclarissimus liber elementorum Euclidis perspicacissimi: in artem geometrie incipit quam foelicissime) acquired by the UM Library is a revised version based on earlier Latin translations and new translations of various Arabic sources. Reprinted in Vicenza, Italy, by Leonardus de Basilea and Gulielmus de Papia, this edition omits the dedication to the Doge of Venice found in the first edition. The decorative border on the first page was changed from Arabic motifs to Cupid, plants, and animals, and the typeface was changed from Gothic to more legible Roman type. Rare book expert Jeremy Norman highly appraised this acquisition, and only 84 libraries worldwide hold this 1491 edition. CHINESE AND PORTUGUESE ACADEMICIANS SHARED THE VALUE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE INCUNABULUM OF EUCLID’S ELEMENTS ACQUIRED BY UM On October 28, 2024, the University of Macau hosted a sharing session titled “Mathematical Classics and Knowledge Dissemination: The Value and Significance of the Incunabulum of Euclid’s Elements” in the lecture hall of the Research Building (N21). Firstly, Prof. Rui Martins, Vice Rector introduced how the 1491 edition of Euclid’s Elements acquired by on the University of Macau Library and became one of the most precious rare books. Then, Prof. Tang Tao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and president of Guangzhou Southern University, discussed the significance of collecting this book and the history of how the book Elements spread over China. Prof. José Francisco Rodrigues, academician of Academy of Sciences of Lisbon and professor of the University of Lisbon, gave detailed explanations and wonderful sharing on the historical background of the incunabulum and differences between the 1491 and the 1482 editions of the Elements. The event brought together library professionals from various Macau higher education institutions to discuss sustaining the value of print reading in the AI era. On July 23, 2025, Mr. Benjamin Meunier, University Librarian, and Ms. Jenny Lam, Open Science Librarian from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), visited the University of Macau (UM) Library. University Librarian Prof. Helen Xu and Functional Heads Stephen Lei, Wilson Hoi, and Priscilla Pun joined the delegation for discussions on open science development and research publishing. The group also toured the “Winds of Confluence” and “Regarding Books” exhibitions. Rudolph East Asian Library, University of California at Los Angeles, and comprised representatives from renowned university libraries from North America and Mainland China, On the afternoon of June 27, 2025, a delegation from Shanghai Normal University Library, including Deputy Director Gu Shaoquan, Director of the Discipline & Information Services Center Ma Lingyun, Center Ma Lingyun, Deputy Director of the Data & Technical Support Center Qiao Guocheng, and Sun Qi from the Ancient Books & Special Collections Preservation Center, visited the University of Macau Library. 2025 is the election year for the leadership of sections under the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). We are delighted to learn from the recently announced election results that four representatives from the University of Macau Library have been elected or re-elected to positions in IFLA’s sections, namely Prof. Helen Xu, University Librarian, and the Functional Heads Priscilla Pun, Stephen Lei and Wilson Hoi. Priscilla Pun, functional head of the UM Library, participated in the international conference “Culture, Knowledge and Community” held in Barcelona, Spain, in 澳大圖書館職務主管潘雅茵於2024年10月參與在西班牙巴塞羅納舉行的“文化、 知識和社區”國際研討會。研討會由多個設於國際圖書館協會和機構聯合會 （IFLA）的西班牙組織主辦，潘雅茵在“圖書館在氣候行動和可持續發展的前 沿”分會場發表了以“圖書館與可持續城市：以澳門特別行政區為例”為題的報告。 為慶祝新中國成立75週年、澳門回歸祖國25週年，館員陳智榮於2024年10月參加「澳門青年看祖國」交流 團青春匯報會，並以古籍館員身份進行演講，分享了古籍文化與愛國情懷。他希望藉此聯合 更多朋友，守護典籍，向世界講好中國古籍文化的故事。 To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return, Staty Chan from the UM Library participated in the “Macau Youth visiting the Motherland” presentation in October 2024. Prof. Helen Xu was invited to attend the Cambridge University Press Asia Librarian Advisory Board (CALAB) meeting organized by Cambridge University Press at The University of Hong Kong on 27 and 28 Mar 2025. She was honored with the IFLA Dynamic Unit and Impact Award (DUIA) – Best Communication Award on behalf of her committee. The 89th World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) 2025, organized by IFLA, was held in Astana, Kazakhstan from August 17 to 22.
