Library Activity: Book Exhibition on European Foremost Sinologist Jacques Gernet (2018/03/09)

Dear All,

In commemoration of an eminent sinologist, Jacques Gernet, the University of Macau Library will hold a book exhibition entitled “Book Exhibition on European Foremost Sinologist Jacques Gernet” in the UM Library from 9 March to 10 May 2018, with special exhibition of the T'oung Pao - the first international journal of Chinese studies founded in 1890 and jointly edited by Jacques Gernet and the Dutch sinologist Erik Zürcher.

Cultural exchange between East and West constitutes a primary component of world civilization. Sinology promotes cultural exchange and makes it more significant. Jacques Gernet, the famous French sinologist who single-handedly accomplished a general history of China, passed away in Vannes, France on March 3rd, 2018 at the age of 97. Jacques Gernet devoted his entire life to research of Chinese history and culture and composed profound works on Chinese studies such as Monde Chinois (1972) and Chine et christianisme: La première confrontation (1982).
