Library News -- The UM Library Participates in Preparing International Cataloging Guidelines for Chinese Names (2020/10/21)

 

The cataloging guidelines “Names of Persons: Chinese Names” has been released by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) on 16 October 2020. The Guidelines were co-written by the UM Library, National Library of China, the Joint University Librarians Advisory Committee (JULAC) and Hong Kong Library Association. IFLA has published and released a list including cataloging conventions of over 100 documents of “Names of Persons” since 1996, including language files and countries files, for the purpose of communication and use in the library and other related fields.  The guidelines of Chinese Names were firstly released and it fills the gap in the international cataloging guidelines for Chinese names. It introduces the structures and cataloging rules of Chinese names for non-Chinese librarians worldwide. Details of the guidelines can be found at https://www.ifla.org/node/4953
